Have a death certificate translated into German
Your death certificate, certified and translated by translators authorised in Germany — for the estate and certificate of inheritance, for insurance and pensions, and for probate proceedings abroad.
Certified death certificate translation: settling the estate, the certificate of inheritance and claims abroad
In the event of a death with a foreign dimension, the death certificate is required as a certified translation — for the certificate of inheritance and the probate court, for life and pension insurance, and for accounts and property abroad. We translate the certificate in full and check whether an international death certificate makes a translation unnecessary.
For heirs: probate court, certificate of inheritance and insurance benefits
Heirs need the translated death certificate to settle the estate and assert benefits.
Does the probate court require a certified translation of the death certificate?
Yes. For the certificate of inheritance and the settlement of the estate, the probate court accepts a foreign-language death certificate only with a certified translation by translators authorised in Germany. The certification note confirms accuracy and completeness.
Do I need the translated death certificate for insurance and pensions?
Yes. Life insurers and the pension insurance pay survivor benefits only on presentation of the death certificate; for a foreign certificate the certified translation is required to prove the death.
Does an international death certificate replace the translation?
Often yes. A multilingual international death certificate under the 1976 Vienna CIEC Convention is exempt from any formality in Germany and needs no translation. We check in advance whether the registry office issues it and saves you the translation.
For an estate abroad: using the German death certificate with an apostille
If the estate is to be settled abroad, the German death certificate is usually required with an apostille and a translation.
Who issues the apostille for a German death certificate?
The apostille for civil-status documents is issued by the authority designated by your federal state — not the registry office and not the translation agency. As the certificate holder you obtain the apostille; we handle the subsequent certified translation.
Is the certificate of inheritance for use abroad translated as well?
Yes. If a certificate of inheritance issued by a German probate court is to be used abroad, it is as a rule required with an apostille and a certified translation. For assets in another EU state, the European Certificate of Succession is an alternative.
Into which language do you translate the death certificate?
We translate the death certificate into the official language of the destination country in which the estate is settled; the certified translation by authorised translators is recognised there in conjunction with the apostille.

Translating a death certificate – frequently asked questions
Do you translate international death certificates?
Yes – we also translate multilingual international death certificates with certification, including all notes.
Do I need an apostille?
For use abroad, often yes; the apostille is issued by the competent authority, and we translate including the note.
How fast is it?
Quote usually in about 120 minutes; the document is translated at short notice.
What does it cost?
From €0.95 per standard line; for the document you receive a fixed price in advance.
Which bodies require the certified translation of the death certificate?
The probate court for the certificate of inheritance, the Deutsche Rentenversicherung and insurance providers for survivors' benefits, and the registry office for register maintenance require the certified translation of the death certificate. We render the date of death, place of death and all official notes completely and unchanged.
Does Panorama issue the apostille for the death certificate?
No – the apostille or legalisation is issued by the authority responsible for it, not by us. We translate the death certificate including the apostille note completely and with certification and advise you on which body is responsible for your intended use.
