Does a marriage contracted abroad have to be translated in Germany?
Yes. The registry office recognises a foreign marriage only if the marriage certificate is available as a certified translation by translators authorised in Germany. Only then are the subsequent entry in the marriage register and the use of the joint married name possible.
Does an international marriage certificate replace the translation?
Often yes. A multilingual international certificate under the 1976 Vienna CIEC Convention is exempt from any formality in Germany and needs no translation. If the certificate comes from an EU country, a form under Regulation (EU) 2016/1191 can alternatively replace the translation — we check both in advance.
How is the married name reproduced in the translation?

For naturalisation and spousal reunification: proving the marriage
For naturalisation, a residence permit and the reunification of the spouse, the marriage must be evident from the translated marriage certificate.
Does the immigration office need a certified translation of the marriage certificate?
Yes. For spousal reunification the diplomatic mission requires the marriage certificate as a certified translation for the visa, and the immigration office does so within Germany, in order to examine the marriage as the basis of the residence permit.
Is the marriage certificate translated for naturalisation?
Yes. The naturalisation authority recognises the marital status only on the basis of the certified translation of the marriage certificate. In naturalisation following marriage to a German national it is a regular part of the documents.
Does the foreign marriage certificate also need an apostille?
Depending on the issuing state, the authority requires an apostille or legalisation of the certificate; the certificate holder obtains this in the issuing country, not the translation agency. We handle the subsequent certified translation.

Does a marriage contracted abroad have to be registered in Germany?
An entry in the marriage register is not mandatory but is recommended for the use of names and the issuing of German marriage certificates. For this the registry office requires the certified translation of the foreign marriage certificate including all notes and seals.
Is an international multilingual marriage certificate sufficient without a translation?
Multilingual documents under the CIEC Convention (Formule A) are accepted by many registry offices without a translation. However, if the document contains country-specific entries or lacks German as a language, the certified translation is required – we check your document in advance.
