What a certified translation is – and who may issue it
A certified translation is a translation whose completeness and accuracy are confirmed by a court-authorised (sworn) translator with stamp, signature and a certification note. Only translations produced this way are accepted by German authorities, courts and registry offices.
Authorisation is granted by the regional and higher regional courts under the law of each federal state; depending on the state the title is “ermächtigt”, “beeidigt” or “öffentlich bestellt” – all sworn translators. We work exclusively with such translators and deliver the certification in the required format – digitally and, on request, as a paper original by post.

What acceptance really depends on
Whether a certified translation is accepted rarely comes down to word choice – it comes down to the receiving authority’s formal requirements. We work through these criteria systematically, so your documents can be used without rework.
- ✓Stamps & endorsements – every stamp, certification mark and marginal note carried over in full.
- ✓Names & spellings – consistent with your passport/ID, no diverging transliterations.
- ✓Numbers, dates & addresses – formatted correctly for the target authority, no silent conversions.
- ✓Form of certification – matched to the authority – digital or paper, with guidance on apostille/legalisation where needed.
- ✓Completeness & page order – nothing omitted; layout and sequence remain traceable.
Certified translation – your questions
What is a certified translation?
A certified translation carries the stamp, signature and certification note of a court-authorised (sworn) translator confirming completeness and accuracy. German authorities and courts only accept translations produced this way.
Who may produce certified translations?
Only translators authorised (ermächtigt / beeidigt / öffentlich bestellt) by the regional courts. We work exclusively with such translators for each language.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Billing is per standard line from 0.95 €. For standard documents we give you a binding fixed price upfront, certification included – no hidden costs.
Is the translation also recognised abroad?
Certified translations issued in Germany are recognised domestically; for use abroad an apostille is often required in addition. The apostille is issued by the competent authority – we translate the document including the apostille note.
Is a digital certified translation sufficient?
Many bodies accept the digital version; where the original is required we deliver the paper version with stamp and signature by post. We clarify this with you in advance.
How fast will I receive it?
You usually receive a fixed-price quote within about 120 minutes; individual certificates are delivered within a few working days, express available.
Certified translation: terms, apostille & recognition
Certified, sworn, authorised – the terms
“Certified translation”, “sworn translator” and the German titles ermächtigt/beeidigt all refer to the same thing – a legally valid translation by a court-authorised translator.
The formally correct German term is “bestätigte Übersetzung” (confirmed translation); colloquially and with authorities “beglaubigte Übersetzung” (certified translation) has become established. The translator’s title depends on the federal state. What matters is the certification note with stamp and signature.
Apostille & legalisation for abroad
For use abroad many bodies additionally require an apostille or legalisation of the document.
We do not issue the apostille ourselves – depending on the document type the competent court or the relevant state authority is responsible. We translate the document including the apostille note and advise on the correct order.
Certified translation or professional translation?
Not every translation has to be certified – for internal or commercial purposes a professional translation is often sufficient.
You need a certified translation wherever an authority, court or public office requires it (certificates, diplomas, contracts for proceedings). For marketing, internal documents or correspondence a professional translation is enough. We recommend the right form for each use.
