Does the naturalisation authority need a certified translation of the birth certificate?
Yes. The naturalisation authority — with the involvement of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) in cases with a federal dimension — accepts foreign-language birth certificates only with a certified translation by translators authorised in Germany. The certification note confirms accuracy and completeness.
How are names from a different script translated in a birth certificate?
Names in Cyrillic, Arabic or Asian script are transliterated according to the relevant transliteration standard (ISO), so that the spelling matches your passport and the German population register. Divergent spellings are the most common reason for queries from the authority.
Does a multilingual form replace a translation for an EU birth certificate?
Often yes. Under Regulation (EU) 2016/1191 a multilingual standard form attached by the issuing body can replace the translation where the authority considers the information sufficient. We check this in advance so that you do not pay for an unnecessary translation.
For parents and the registry office: name registration, child benefit and parental allowance
For marriage, name registration and family benefits, the birth certificate is required as a certified translation.
Does the family benefits office (Familienkasse) require a translated birth certificate for child benefit?
Yes. For child benefit and parental allowance the Familienkasse recognises the parentage of a child born abroad only if the birth certificate is available as a certified translation. The certified translation proves the relationship in a legally reliable way.
Is the birth certificate translated for name registration after marriage?
Yes. The registry office needs the translated birth certificate to record the birth name and the new name correctly in the marriage register. We reproduce the birth name unchanged and to standard.
In what format does the registry office accept the translation?
The registry office accepts the certified translation with the certification note of the translator authorised in Germany, usually firmly attached to a copy of the certificate. You receive a digital PDF in advance and, on request, the hard copy by post.
