Is a foreign adoption automatically recognised in Germany?
Only in part. If the child comes from a contracting state of the Hague Adoption Convention and the body there certifies conformity under Article 23, the adoption is recognised without a further procedure. Otherwise the German family court must recognise it under the Adoption Effects Act (AdWirkG).

Which German documents do I need to have translated for the country of origin?
The country of origin as a rule requires the social report of the adoption agency, proof of income and health, and the certificate of good conduct — translated in certified form into the official language of the country and often with an apostille.
Do I need an apostille for the adoption documents?
Often yes. For use abroad the diplomatic mission or authority of the country of origin requires an apostille on the German documents; this is issued by the authority designated by your federal state, not the translation agency. We deliver the certified translation to go with it.

Which body is responsible for recognising a foreign adoption?
In Germany, recognition of a foreign adoption is decided by the competent family court, while the subsequent registration in the civil-status register is carried out by the registry office.
